How Jarrod Bowen learned to use his head – and keep West Ham looking up

Jarrod Bowen and Erling Haaland are not forwards who will be compared often.
For a start, West Ham United’s star man is 5ft 9in (175cm) and Manchester City’s is 6ft 4in, bullying defenders at will. But Bowen’s aerial presence has shone this season — despite his diminutive frame — to such an extent that he is level with Haaland for headed goals scored (three) in the Premier League.
Bowen has netted this way against Nottingham Forest, Liverpool and Luton Town. It is a significant turnaround for a player who failed to score a header in the whole of 2022-23.
It’s not as if West Ham fans need another reason to venerate Bowen, given the striker has been recalled to the England squad, signed a new seven-year contract with the club and recently became the first player in Premier League history to score in his side’s first six away games of the season — and not to mention Bowen scoring the winner against Fiorentina in the Europa Conference League final in June.
“He’s a lot better in the air than people give him credit for,” said his manager David Moyes. “His timing is down and he can get in front of people. The reason he’s up front is because we’re not surprised by his ability to score. When you’re playing up front, you want to get goals and he’s been able to do that.”
The danger Bowen poses aerially is impressive considering he is West Ham’s smallest forward; Divin Mubama is 6ft, Michail Antonio is 5ft 11in and Danny Ings is 5ft 10in. Instead of height, Bowen relies on game awareness, technical quality and determination to make sure he works an advantage over his marker in the air.
Before his header against Nottingham Forest, which pulled the scoreline level at 2-2, Bowen produced a soaring leap above defender Murillo, who is around four inches taller than him.
As Sky Sports commentator Don Goodman, the former Wolverhampton Wanderers striker, observed: “Jarrod Bowen isn’t the biggest West Ham player out there, but he’s the one that attacks (the ball) the best.”
In the 3-1 loss away to Liverpool, Antonio mistimed his header moments before Bowen’s goal. It was a case of Bowen showing his team-mate how it’s done as he signals to Vladimir Coufal to cross…
Despite Bowen initially creating space between him and Virgil van Dijk, the Liverpool defender manages to get goalside. But Coufal whips a cross towards Bowen’s midriff, which allows him to score a diving header. Had it been a normally contested header, Van Dijk’s height (6ft 4in) means he would have likely won that battle.
In the 2-1 victory against Luton Town, Bowen is outside the box before Lucas Paqueta threads a pass to him.
The forward advances into the box and places himself between defenders Amari’i Bell (5ft 11in) and Ryan Giles (6ft) to score.
Bowen has always had the predatory instinct of a forward but his recent consistency in the role is why Moyes feels inclined to now play him through the middle, rather than on the wing.
“I’m loathe to say he’s suddenly a No 9 because we might need him to play No 7 and do the job that he’s doing there,” said Moyes. “But in time, I see it changing for Jarrod. Hopefully, people would have seen my thoughts over a few months. I actually think Freiburg (in the Europa League in October) was probably the night: he was terrific and that made me feel it.”
In the four Premier League seasons between 2019 and 2023, Bowen only attempted nine headed shots — three of which were on target. This season, however, the forward has registered eight headed shots, with five on target.
Moyes’ backroom staff, particularly technical advisor Alan Irvine and the former first-team coach Stuart Pearce, challenged Bowen to become a more rounded player. His best goalscoring campaign for West Ham was in 2021-22 when he scored 18 in all competitions. Still, West Ham staff felt Bowen was capable of improving.
They believed that his tendency to cut in on his left foot made him predictable to defenders and would make him less of a threat. But since then, Bowen has improved this aspect of his game to take more shots with his right foot. A similar proportion of his efforts on goal come via his stronger foot, but he is taking more shots in general, including with his right foot.
Moyes is a manager who appreciates the value of a headed goal more than most. During his spell in charge of Everton between 2002 and 2013, Moyes often relied on Tim Cahill, Duncan Ferguson and Marouane Fellaini to be his main aerial targets.
Ferguson (36) and Cahill (31) are in the top 10 for most headed goals scored in the Premier League, while former West Ham forwards Les Ferdinand (40) and Teddy Sheringham (36) also feature.
Nobody is suggesting Bowen is likely to challenge that company any time soon, but he is certainly making his presence felt. He now has 35 Premier League goals for the club and is only two away from Trevor Sinclair, who is fifth in the club’s top scorers list in the division.
It has been a season of milestones for Bowen — and he is showing no signs of slowing down.
